This boards measure approximately 0.5 inches thick and are commonly referred to as drum boards. They are a more heavy duty board than regular 3mm or 4mm thick ones, and are designed to be able to carry heavier cakes, such as fruit cakes, and multi-tiered wedding cakes.

Drum boards that are two inches bigger than the largest tier are generally used. For example, if you are baking a 14 inch cake, you will need a 16 inch drum board.
